Downscaling Your Black Friday Offers

November 07, 20243 min read

It's that time of year again... the leaves have turned, the air is crisp, and yes—Black Friday is looming large. But before you dive headfirst into the frenzy of sales and discounts, let's take a moment to pause and reflect. What if this year, instead of getting swept up in the chaos, we chose to focus on something even more precious?

The Year-End Hustle

I get it... Black Friday can feel like a business owner's Olympics—a chance to flex those marketing muscles and boost end-of-year profits. But here's a thought: does it have to be?

This year, I find myself looking forward to gathering with family. The thought of a knee jerk reaction to check my stats during Turkey Time just don’t sit well with me. And I’m just not feeling the hustle right now.

Why Family Time Matters More Than Ever

We all know life moves fast... like really fast. My oldest is moving on to high school next year (yikes!) and I keep thinking how long we’re going to have him before he’s not going to want to hang out with family anymore. Kids grow up, moments pass by, and this year I’m very conscious of the fact that we only have so much time with our kids before they move on.

Here's what I'm looking to concentrate on this holiday season:

  • Memories Over Money: You can't put a price tag on laughter-filled evenings or heartwarming traditions.

  • Recharge Your Batteries: Stepping back from work gives you space to recharge your creative energy.

  • Strengthen Bonds: Investing time in relationships strengthens bonds that last far longer than any sale.

How to Gracefully Downscale Your Black Friday Efforts

But that being said, we are still running our businesses and we do still want to offer value to our clients and customers this holiday season. So, how do you actually make a family-centric holiday plan as a small business owner happen without feeling guilty about missed biz opportunities? Fear not; I've got some tips!

1. Prioritize What Matters Most

Start by identifying which aspects of your business truly need attention during this period—and which ones can wait until January rolls around (trust me, they will still be there). Think about tasks that align with long-term goals rather than short-term gains.

2. Automate Where You Can

Technology is your friend! Use automation tools for social media posts or email campaigns so things run smoothly even when you're off enjoying turkey dinner with Aunt Sally.

3. Communicate Early & Clearly

Let clients know ahead of time about any changes in availability due to reduced operations over the holidays. If you work with physical products, let customers know about any potential extended lead or shipping times. In my experience, people appreciate you letting them know and are more than happy to adjust accordingl – the key is to let them know asap!

4. Offer Limited-Time Deals Beforehand

Consider running smaller promotions leading up to Black Friday instead of going all-out on one or two days alone—this way everyone wins!

Finding Joy Beyond Sales Figures

As small business owners (and humans), it's easy sometimes to equate success solely with numbers: sales figures climbing higher than Jack's beanstalk or website traffic breaking records left-right-centre... But let's not forget there's another kind of joy waiting beyond those digits—the kind found around dining tables filled with love (and maybe an extra slice—or three—of pumpkin pie).

Embracing Balance This Holiday Season

So here we are at decision time… Are you ready? Ready not just for another round-the-clock selling spree but also ready for something deeper—more meaningful? Remember friends—it’s okay (more than okay) if this year looks different from previous ones because ultimately what matters most isn’t how much money was made but rather how many hearts were touched along our journey…

I challenge each of you to make this holiday season one of balance and meaningful connections. Choose what brings you true joy and fulfillment, and let that guide your path. Here's to cherishing every moment with those who matter most.
